While many leading legal theorists have endorsed legal realism, for many years it still remained at the fringes of legal academia at large. Simultaneously political scientists, economists and anthropologists have contributed significantly to the study of "law in action". It seems paradoxical therefore that although it is often called for, legal realism as an empirical approach to understanding legal systems is rarely practiced consistently by legal scientists. But perhaps this is now changing. The last decades have witnessed a new generation of scholars that seem ready to pick up the baton and seriously reconsider legal realism as a contender in mainstream legal scholarship.

Acknowledging the fundamental insights offered by legal realism, this conference aims to take stock of this renewed interest in legal realism by bringing together a group of distinguished academics who are at the forefront of scholarship in this field.

The conference is hosted by the Centre for the Studies in Legal Culture   and iCourts - Danish National Research Foundation's Centre of Excellence for International Courts (www.jura.ku.dk/icourts), both Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, and it is sponsored by the  Carlsberg Foundation  in conjunction with the above centres.
