The CJEU's stem cell decision in Brüstle v. Greenpeace

On March 23rd, 2012 the MedWatch Journal, which is a web-based newspaper specialized in Biotech, Medicine & Pharma, published an interview with Ass. Prof. Timo Minssen. The article dealt with a recent interdisciplinary symposium held at Carlsberg akademi, which discussed the recent CJEU decision in Brüstle v. Greenpeace. The article addressed in particular the potentially severe impact of the judgment on European embryonic stem cell (hESC) patents and hESC research. At the same time it is pointed out that there is a "silver lining" on the horizon due to rapid advances in blastomere separation and induced pluripotent (adult) stem cell technology that might result in feasible alternatives not requiring the destruction of embryos.
