CECS Solidarity seminar with Alexander Somek, Professor of Legal Philosophy, Faculty of Law, University of Vienna

By “post-national democracy” one can understood at least three different things: first, a democracy located at a level superior to (“supra”) existing nation states; second, a democracy that no longer relies on the national community as an integrating factor; and, third, a set of institutions designed to remedy representation deficits that are inherent in nationally bounded democratic regimes. In my presentation, I would like to explore whether a post-national democracy in the second sense would be sufficiently vigorous. It will be seen that the relation between democracy and solidarity is decisive for answering this question.
